Prestbury Fishing Club

Minutes of Prestbury Fishing Club meeting on 15 March 2004

In attendance: George Hauser (President), Marv Doty, Steve Keierleber, Mr. and Mrs. Marty Swanson, Aurie Davy and Tom Dornback.

Steve Keierleber gave a report on the results of winter ice fishing. Many bluegills, some crappies, several bass and one striper were caught. All fish caught appeared to be healthy.

George Hauser suggested that the fishing club participate in lake shore clean up, weather permitting, April 3rd. Everyone in Prestbury that can spare the time is asked to help out.

Marv Doty presented a handout that summarized the 7 major recommendations from the 2003 DNR report.

There was discussion on the use of lake aerators. As this was one of the recommendations made in the 2003 DNR report, it was agreed that George Hauser would discuss with PCA board member Ed Powers, the possibility of relocating the present aerator to the center of Lake Prestbury.

George is also going to discuss with Ed Powers the continuation of last years efforts to create some fish spawning beds in the lake. The club recommends that this year we use several hardwood pallets.

The discussion then turned to possible additions of new fish to continue the program to properly restock the two Prestbury lakes from the fish kill of several years ago. The last two years of the fish restocking program have been very successful. The club is closely following recommendations from lake professionals on the numbers and quantities of fish to be added to the two Prestbury lakes.

Marv Doty recommended that we add 200 to 300 larger (3" to 5") bluegills to the both Lake Prestbury and Blackberry Lake. In addition he suggested that we add about 200 8" to 10" channel catfish (Lake Prestbury only). Marv will also investigate if Emerald Shiners and Golden Roaches are available as food for new fish in both lakes.

The cost of these new fish and food will come from funds that were previously donated by club members, Prestbury residents, and PCA. The club is asking for any donations that can be made to help support this very successful restocking program.

Marv Doty reported the following fish have already been added in 6 different stockings since the fish kill:

Largemouth Bass 1,355

Channel Catfish 250

Bluegills and Hybrid Sunfish 2,950

Hybrid Stripers 250

Fathead Minnows 126 lbs

Note: 15% of the above have been placed in Blackberry Lake

The club discussed sponsoring a "Carp-a-thon" during the first week of June, open to all Prestbury residents. Prizes will be given for the largest carp caught, and the most number of carp caught by an adult and by a child.

The club will also participate in the 2004 Prestbury fishing derby. Tom to discuss details with Erica Cox.

The Prestbury Fishing club is open to all Prestbury residents. If anyone is interested in joining, they should call George Hauser, Marv Doty or Tom Dornback.
