Prestbury Fishing Club

The PFC met on 17 September 2003.

Several issues were discussed.
One member of the club that fishes Blackberry Lake, raised the question of
adding some Triploid Grass Carp to reduce the amount of underwater grass in
that lake.
There was much discussion re. the pros and cons of doing this. This type of
Carp is used for biological weed control and takes approximately two years
to provide good control. Stocking rates are based on the percentage of weed
cover, and size of the lake. If a lake has weed cover of 20-40%, 5 Triploid
Carp per lake acres should be stocked. 40-60% weed cover, 10 Triploid Carp
per lake acres are recommended. Lakes must have an area 7-10' deep for the
fish to over-winter. The Grass Carp is sterile and will not reproduce.
Approval from the Illinois Dept of Natural Resources is required to stock
this type of Carp in Blackberry Lake. It was also agreed that the PCA board
would have to be consulted, and approve such an effort. The cost of 8 - 11"
Triploid Grass Carp is $8.00 each. Another club member suggested that a
marine biologist be consulted before these Carp are acquired.
Re. the fish census taken this summer. No members of the PFC have yet seen a
report on this survey. George Hauser said he would check with Ed Powers to
find out if any report has been issued.
There was also considerable discussion on the condition of Lake Prestbury.
Although there was some dead fish reported a week earlier, they apparently
were all Carp.
Several members reported that the Large Mouth Bass, Striped Bass and
Bluegills from our stocking programs are doing very well. Everyone agreed
that the lake had recovered very well since the 100% game fish kill of 2
winters ago. We all benefit from our two lakes being healthy. The Prestbury
Fishing Club would like to thank all residents who were kind enough to
contribute dollars to this restocking effort.
The issue of adding additional fish to Lake Prestbury and Blackberry Lake
was discussed. There was consensus that no additional game fish will be
added this fall. However some efforts may be made to add food for the game
fish. The issue of additional restocking will be discussed again after we
see how the fish survive the winter.
The club also discussed several options that might be taken if we have an
early freeze followed by a heavy snow (as we had the winter of the fish
kill). We may try some snow removal, but that was not firmly decided.
All residents of Prestbury are invited to attend future meetings of the
Prestbury Fishing Club. If anyone is interested in joining they should
contact George Hauser,
Marv Doty, or Tom Dornback.
